Understanding Copper’s Properties and Caring for Your Copper Jewelry

For centuries, jewelers have used copper, a beautiful and versatile metal. Its warm tones and natural character make it a popular choice. However, understanding copper’s properties is key to enjoying your copper jewelry for years to come.

The Nature of Copper:

Copper (Cu) is a pure element. Like sterling silver, it’s prone to oxidation, meaning it reacts with air and moisture, causing it to darken over time. This is a natural process and contributes to copper’s unique patina. Factors like sunlight, sweat, chlorine, cosmetics, and other chemicals can accelerate oxidation.

Caring for Your Copper:

  • Prevention is Key: Remove your copper jewelry before bathing, swimming, exercising, doing dishes, or applying lotions and makeup. Keep your jewelry clean and dry.
  • Embracing the Patina: Some prefer the aged look that oxidation provides. For this, a gentle cleaning with mild dish soap and warm water using a soft brush is all you need.
  • Maintaining the Shine: If you prefer a brighter look, soak your copper jewelry (without stones or patina) in a glass bowl with a mixture of vinegar and salt. Important Note: This method is not recommended for jewelry with stones or applied patinas, as it can cause damage.

The Green Enigma:

Have you ever noticed a green mark on your skin after wearing copper jewelry? This is a common occurrence. It happens when the natural acids in your skin react with the copper, forming copper salts. The green color simply indicates that your skin has become more acidic. This acidity causes the copper to dissolve at a faster rate than your body can absorb it. This can be due to various factors, including sweat, stress, or dietary changes. Copper salts are harmless and can be easily washed off with soap and warm water.

When your body is in balance, the copper is absorbed and dissolved at the same rate, preventing green marks. The green marks can appear one day, but not the next depending on your body chemistry at that moment.

A Protective Layer:

Our copper pieces are coated with Renaissance Wax to help slow down oxidation and patination. However, this is not a permanent solution, and the wax will wear off over time.

Understanding copper and following these simple care tips will allow you to enjoy its beauty and unique character for years.
